Sex Education for Teenagers:
I offer sex education for teenagers that moves beyond what is offered on the RSE curriculum. I address the issues of abuse, and – knowing that children and teenagers are more likely to disclose to a peer – I offer participants information on how to deal with disclosure. Knowing that teachers aren’t empowered to know how to deal with disclosure, either, I offer an hour’s training to teachers in schools, clubs, and associations where I provide education to teenagers.
This training covers:
- Consent – looking beyond the ‘buzz’ and unpacking what consent really is. This includes a look at Betty Martin’s ‘Wheel of Consent’
- Discussion of friendships and romantic relationships
- Power and control within relationships
- Gender stereotypes
- Conception – how it happens, including discussion of assisted reproduction, and how it doesn’t (myth-busting)
- Contraception
- Pornography
- The importance of pleasure
- Healthy sex – emotionally and physically
- Exploring sexuality – asking for what you need, what you want, and meeting your partner’s need and wants (and if you should/or are obliged to)
- Sexual assault, rape, and seeking help if you are a victim
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Prevention for Teenagers:
More commonly referred to as ‘Domestic’ violence, this form of abuse is most prevalent in the 15-24 year age group. That’s why it’s important to start the discussion early. I received my training in this specialised area from Tender, in the UK– and I use a number of their materials when I work with teenagers on the recognition, and avoidance of, IPV. I offer this training with a male colleague.
